We are trying to develop iPS cell-based renal regenerative medicine by the organogenic niche method in collaboration with the Jikei University School of Medicine and other institutions. The resulting progenitor cells derived from cells of one animal species are transplanted into the organogenic niche of the fetus of another animal species. The progenitor cells then develop a xeno-organ available for transplantation. We are testing this approach using human iPS cells in genetically-modified pig fetuses for renal transplantations.

For the joint research with the Jikei University School of Medicine and other institutions, we have verified the transplantation protocols targeting monkey as the recipient. We are working on human iPS cell-derived nephron progenitor cells for clinical use. We aim to realize the practical use of iPS cell-based medicine for severe renal failure.
