Aside of kidney transplantation, there are practically no curative therapies for chronic kidney disease (CKD). While dialysis is one therapeutic option, the quality of life of the patient deteriorates. Relevant medical costs are also a problem. Thus, new therapies that improve the symptomatic state and reduce the number of dialysis patients are needed. iPS cell-derived nephron progenitor cells produced through the differentiation induction method invented by Dr. Kenji Osafune, our Chief Scientific Advisor and Professor of the Center for iPS Cell Research and Application (CiRA), Kyoto University, have promise in treatments for renal disorders. We are developing these iPS cell-derived nephron progenitor cells for medical purposes.
