About CiRA Foundation

Q Why is it possible to receive the iPS cells at a low price (or free of charge) ?

A

We operate as a public interest incorporated foundation, not as a for-profit company. We do not "sell" iPS cells, but provide them to non-profit institutions free of charge and to for-profit institutions at a low price as a "joint research fee".

Please note that we cannot provide cells for purchase only, only for collaborative research.

Please also note that the initial cost of the iPS cells is 50,000 yen for research-grade and 100,000 yen for clinical-grade, but partners are required to pay 50 million yen at the time of approval as an ownership transfer fee. (This cost is half for ventures and is a one-time payment for partners.) An information maintenance fee (0.5% of worldwide sales for 20 years from the year following approval) will also be charged.

Q Is CiRA Foundation the same organization as CiRA?

A

It is not the same organization. Please refer to the respective websites for this information.

Q Why do we need to submit various documents?

A

In Japan, even when using donor-derived iPS cells for basic research, it is necessary to follow the regulations in "Ethical Guidelines for Medical Research Involving Human Subjects."

This is also required of overseas research institutions that receive our iPS cells.

Using iPS Cell Stock

Q Why can't we ask you to provide us with iPS cells for clinical use from the beginning?

A

Since the supply of clinical-grade iPS cells is limited, we ask users to please select the most suitable iPS cell line for their purpose first with research iPS cells.

Q Is it possible to have the ownership transferred to us?

A

It is possible. The transfer will be done after the clinical trial notification.
